Our Story

Our Story

The Foundation began with a group of passionate real tennis enthusiasts, who recognised that the future of real tennis lies in encouraging juniors to play.

The Foundation was set up by Josh Farrall, David Mills and Roger Pilgrim, three members of The Dedanists’ Society (one of the best known nomadic clubs in England) in association with the T&RA and its former Chairman, William Maltby. Julian Wilkinson joined in January 2013 and is the charity’s Secretary and Treasurer. Simon Roundell, a master at Wellington College with responsibility for real tennis, joined in November 2017. Three new Directors joined in 2019, Simon Mansfield, Chairman of Real Tennis at Queens Club, Francis Moore of the Moore Family Office and Dan Jones. Dan is the Head professional at Wellington Real Tennis Club and is universally accepted as the UK’s leading junior coach. Graham Defries became a Director of the Foundation in 2020, followed by Michael Rummel in 2023. William Maltby and Roger Pilgrim stepped down as Directors in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

The founding Directors of the charity are personally closely engaged with real tennis at club and national level, giving them a unique perspective allowing them to oversee the Foundation’s programmes and ensure its objectives are achieved.

Our game has too few young players - only 6.6% of the T&RA’s members are under 20 compared with 11.8% of the population aged between 10 and 20 - while many older players say they wish they had started playing when younger. The Dedanists’ Foundation aims to remedy our game’s under-representation of the young.
